J.K. Simmons is the latest to state some confusion with the future of The Batman. Simmons, who will be playing Commissioner James Gordon in a small appearance for Justice League, said that he is unsure if he will be a part of The Batman. Late last week actor Joe Manganiello indicated that he is no longer certain about whether he will star in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” film.
Simmons will make his debut in the role in this Fall’s “Justice League” and was asked in a recent interview with Screen Crush about what is next for him. While he sounded hopeful to return to the role, Simmons did explain that he was uncertain when that will be:
“My part in the first film coming out this fall is very, very small… It’s a little introduction of the character. But whenever the next one gets off the ground, whether it’s ‘The Batman’ movie or the ‘Justice League’ sequel, and I know those things are getting shuffled around right now … we thought we might be getting to work pretty soon on ‘The Batman,’ but we’ll see what the future brings. Hopefully that’ll be another comic-book character that I get to take two or three or four cracks at.”
Of course, fans are certainly hoping that Simmons will get to play Commissioner Gordon again for the eventual sequel to Justice League. The second ensemble film is not expected to hit theaters until June 2019. Many expect Simmons to make an appearance in The Batman, but details about the standalone movie have been subject to change in recent months.
After Ben Affleck departed the feature as director, Warner Bros. brought Reeves in to take his place. The film is reportedly undergoing a full rewrite, so Simmons’ involvement with the film could be altered any which way. Certainly, fans will expect him to be in it. “The Batman” was originally set to begin shooting in the next couple of months, but now seems unlikely to shoot until late 2017/early 2018 with the film not opening until sometime in 2019.
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot will be reprising their roles as the DC Trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in Warner Bros.‘ Justice League, and joining them are Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with Willem Dafoe appearing in a mystery role, and Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon.
“Justice League” is currently slated for a November 2017 release.
What do you think about the possibility of not seeing Gordon in The Batman? Could the solo film about the Dark Knight really not have the commissioner? Let us know in the comments section.
