Ivanka Trump Seated Next To German Chancellor Angela Merkel Has Social Media Asking Why?

Ivanka Trump being seated next to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a meeting involving President Donald Trump. Many on social media took notice of a screenshot of Merkel giving Ivanka a side look while the president’s daughter spoke and had some fun with it.

Ivanka’s specific role in the White House has raised eyebrows, given she has no official title within her father’s administration. The reality TV star, businesswoman and jewelry vendor had a seat next to the German chancellor, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry and speaks fluent Russian, for the roundtable discussion with German and U.S. business leaders. Twitter was quick to spot a theme in the photos that emerged from the encounter.

In some of them, it looks a lot like Merkel is chucking serious side-eye at Trump’s daughter and wondering inside just what she’s doing there. Here are some reactions on social media to Ivanka sitting next to Merkel. What do you think Merkel thought about being seated next to Ivanka? Should the president’s daughter have been there? I really don't understand why Ivanka gets to speak at this meeting with Chancellor Merkel. Seriously, what election did she win?

Why does Ivanka sit in on Trump's meeting with Chancellor Merkel? Did Obama bring Malia or Sasha and I just missed it? #TrumpRussia

In the German media, one of the most perplexing aspects of Merkel's visit was: Why on earth was the Chancellor seated next to Ivanka Trump? pic.twitter.com/3pj3GPECnE

That was not the only bit of awkwardness for Merkel. During a photo op in the Oval Office, the two did not shake hands before reporters. The two leaders tried to express their common bonds but showed minimal rapport in their first encounter, a departure from Merkel’s warm relations with former President Barack Obama during his eight years as president. Merkel sought to break the ice, saying that it was “much better to talk to one another than about one another.”

Donald Trump has been making a routine out of having awkward handshake meetings in the Oval Office for the press. Either making the handshake too long or not doing one.
