Like most dating apps, Bumble was built to allow its users to quickly scan and match with potential romantic partners from the palm of their hands. Now, the app is branching out to help you use that same swiping motion to build your professional network.
The newly launched Bumble Bizz works a lot like regular Bumble. Users can build a separate work profile (ideally one that’s differentiated than their personal one) and swipe on potential clients, employees, and collaborators. Currently, Bumble users can access Bizz mode by updating their app in the App Store. (Android users will have to wait until Oct. 18, as their version isn’t ready yet.)
The concept of a dating app dipping its toes in the professional world might seem a little strange, but technology has changed the way we approach both worlds and it makes sense to borrow best practices from each other. Moreover, recruiting companies like TheLadders have also integrated the swipe feature in their own apps.
True to Bumble’s mission of empowering women to “make the first move,” Bizz is for finding mentors and building one’s network—and not necessarily for recruiting or selling. That said, it won’t be surprising if sales professionals and recruiters quickly get to swiping, as well.
It will be interesting to see how many of Bumble’s 20 million some-odd users decide to shift gears and dip their toes into business mode. The leading online networking community for professionals, LinkedIn, is not without it’s faults and some users have complained that algorithmic changes to the home feed are creating a cluttered environment where self-promotion and so-called “hustle porn” dominate real estate that would be better used for more authentic connections.
Earlier this year, Bumble set up a pop-up networking space in New York designed to help members meet IRL. Whether The Hive was a marketing stunt or a beta test for a grander strategic vision, Bumble is clearly making moves to emerge as a leader in creating more authentic connections that begin in digital spaces and expand to the real world.
